Wouldn’t it be nice to have the answer to your questions, any questions, right at your fingertips when you need it most? The Internet offers an opportunity to have answers quickly and easily, if you just knew where to look and who to trust. Right?
Today I’d like to share some great government resources to find answers to questions you might have about your physical health. There are many health-related government sites but sadly enough too many are not well designed, easy to navigate, or of much help. But there are a handful that are great!
First of all, bookmark the USDA National Nutrient Database.
Here you will find the calorie and nutrient profile of just about any
food. You may have to drill down a bit. But if detail and accuracy is
what you are looking for then chances are good you will find it here.
(Includes many Fast Foods.)
Two sites to bookmark for herbal and other dietary supplements are the Office of Dietary Supplements and Medline Plus.
The Office of Dietary Supplements includes a direct link to fact
sheets on a wide variety of herbs provided by the National Center for
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (National Institutes of Health).
It also covers basic but thorough information about nutrients.
Certain topics such as omega 3 fatty acids are more technical in nature
but most are not.
Medline Plus is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine
and the National Institutes of Health. This site includes good coverage
of the benefits and risks of dietary supplements. And it is also a tremendous source for information on health topics ranging from the digestive system, to the immune system, to the brain and nerves and everything in between.
Two other sites to bookmark include Recipes: A Healthier You and Shape Up America.
The recipe site includes 100 easy to make, delicious heart healthy
selections. You’ll find appetizers, soups, breads, poultry, fish,
vegetables, pasta, rice, sauces, desserts, vegetarian dishes, and more.
All are helpfully categorized by the time needed for preparation.
Shape Up America was
created to help Americans achieve and maintain a healthy body weight
with physical activity and healthy eating. This site provides answers
to basic but fundamental questions about fitness, physical activity,
burning calories, and body fat. Included are a number of helpful
calculators.
Now you know where to turn to answer many of your questions about
achieving better health. Hope this helps! Do let me know what other
information you might be seeking.
